I worked my way up —
breaking every ceiling
along the way.
I was fifteen. I'd just dropped out of school, and I started at reception. Every ceiling after that, I broke through, working all over the world with some of the most enviable brands there are, starting with agency accounts for names like Adidas, Nike and Mont Blanc. The work itself was never the hard part. Getting in the room was. That part, I'm good at.
Frost*, a certified B Corp design studio in Sydney, building campaigns for Alice McCall, Sass & Bide, Seafolly and Sydney Dance Company. Then Collider, directing design and interactive media across film, design and live events for Ksubi, Mecca Cosmetica, Vivid Sydney and the Biennale of Sydney, at a scale most people don't touch until much later in their careers.
London came next: The Loop, then D&AD, the world's most respected creative and design awards body (the Cannes equivalent for art direction), running the awards and curating the judging panels. The Loop itself was a network built to help creative professionals and brands promote their work, connect to commercial opportunities and monetise, and it became the foundation for what would later launch as The Dots. I was hired for exactly one thing: my black book, and my ability to build partnerships, curate, and grow a community from nothing.
Those relationships became the foundation for the next five years, as second-in-command on the founding executive team at The Dots, turning a cold list into signed partnerships with Net-a-Porter, Condé Nast, Universal Music, Spotify, Burberry, the BBC, Vice, Dazed, Tate and the Royal Academy, with equity on the table because the level of ownership was real.
I directed The Other Art Fair x Saatchi Art, launching its first Sydney edition from scratch and turning it into the fair's biggest yet. Later I built community and brand partnerships for an NFT marketplace from zero, bridging web2 creatives into web3 before most people in fashion knew what a wearable was. Then WONDERDOME, shaping brand strategy for a 360° travelling cinematic dome and opening doors with Soho House and Universal Music almost overnight.
Strategy won't break through the ceiling. Rewriting the belief that put it there will.
Every one of those rooms taught me the same thing from a different angle. The strategy was rarely what held people back. What I spent twenty-five years building for other people, I now build for the people ready to start their own thing, or take what they've already built global, through coaching and consulting. That's The Sterling Society.
